This recipe shows you how to make rich, creamy Southern cheese grits using sharp cheddar and heavy cream. This stovetop method delivers authentic flavor and a smooth texture, perfect for breakfast or as a savory side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Bring the water and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.
  2. Slowly whisk in the grits to prevent lumps. Reduce the heat to low.
  3. Cover the saucepan and simmer, stirring every 5 minutes, for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the grits are thick and tender.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the heavy cream and butter until fully melted and combined.
  5. Add the shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Stir constantly until the cheese is completely melted and the grits are smooth and creamy.
  6. Season with black pepper. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  7. Serve your creamy grits immediately as a classic Southern side dish.

Notes

  • For the creamiest texture, shred your own sharp cheddar cheese instead of using pre-shredded varieties, which contain anti-caking agents.
  • If your grits become too thick while sitting, stir in a splash of milk or hot water to reach your desired consistency.
  • This recipe makes a great base for shrimp and grits; simply top with sautéed shrimp.
