Make this upgraded Sloppy Joe recipe using thick, buttery Texas toast instead of regular buns. This meal features a rich, tangy homemade sauce and melted cheese for a satisfying, easy family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (frozen or fresh)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional, for toast)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook until the meat is fully browned and the vegetables are soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper into the meat mixture. Cook for one minute until fragrant.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, and water to create the sauce.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the meat and vegetables. Stir well to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend. This is your best sloppy joe sauce recipe.
  5. While the meat simmers, prepare the Texas toast. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with the minced garlic, if using. Spread the butter mixture evenly on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  6. Toast the bread. You can bake the toast at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes until golden brown, or cook it in a large dry skillet over medium heat until toasted.
  7. To assemble, place four slices of toast butter-side down on a baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture over each slice.
  8. Top the meat mixture with shredded cheese. Place the remaining four slices of toast on top, or serve open-faced.
  9. If serving open-faced, broil for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  10. Serve immediately as hearty sandwich recipes or open-faced.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use garlic Texas toast instead of plain.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the lid during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
  • This recipe works well for budget friendly beef meals and can be doubled easily for game day sloppy joes.
