Make soft, chewy pretzel dogs at home that taste better than store-bought versions. This easy recipe uses a classic baking soda bath to give the dough that signature pretzel flavor and color, perfect for game day snacks or a fun family meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14 ounces) all-beef franks or high-quality sausages
  • 1 package (13.8 ounces) refrigerated pizza dough
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse pretzel salt or kosher salt
  • Optional: Cheese slices for cheesy pretzel dogs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the hot dogs: If using standard franks, cut them in half lengthwise to create thinner strips that wrap more easily. Pat the hot dogs dry with paper towels.
  2. Prepare the dough: Unroll the pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the dough into 8 equal strips. If you want cheese dogs, wrap a slice of cheese around each hot dog before wrapping with dough.
  3. Wrap the hot dogs: Take one strip of dough and stretch it slightly. Wrap the dough around the hot dog, overlapping slightly to fully encase it. Pinch the ends to seal. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs.
  4. Prepare the baking soda bath: In a wide, shallow pan or pot, combine the 8 cups of water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
  5. Dip the dogs: Carefully place one or two wrapped hot dogs into the boiling baking soda water. Boil for 30 seconds, then remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This step gives you the classic pretzel texture and color.
  6. Preheat and egg wash: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Brush the tops of the dipped pretzel dogs evenly with the beaten egg wash.
  7. Salt and bake: Sprinkle the tops generously with coarse pretzel salt. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the dough is deep golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • For air fryer pretzel dogs: Cook at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes, checking frequently to prevent burning.
  • If you want mini pretzel dogs bites, cut the dough strips into smaller pieces and wrap them around cocktail wieners.
  • This dough recipe works well for making plain soft pretzels or pretzel twists too.
  • For a richer color, you can add 1 teaspoon of baking powder to the egg wash.
