Make restaurant-quality Bang Bang Shrimp at home. This recipe delivers crispy shrimp coated in a creamy, sweet, and spicy sauce, perfect as an appetizer or main dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Garnish: chopped green onions or parsley

Instructions

  1. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. Place shrimp in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let sit for 15 minutes.
  2. In a separate shallow dish, whisk together the flour, salt, and pepper for the coating.
  3. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Remove shrimp from buttermilk, letting excess drip off. Dredge each shrimp in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to coat completely.
  5. Carefully place shrimp into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove shrimp with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. While the shrimp drains, prepare the sauce. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, honey, and garlic powder until smooth. This is your homemade bang bang sauce.
  7. Place the hot, crispy shrimp in a large bowl. Pour the sauce over the shrimp and gently toss until all pieces are evenly coated.
  8. Serve immediately garnished with chopped green onions or parsley.

Notes

  • For a healthier option, cook the coated shrimp in an air fryer at 380°F (195°C) for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • To make this a Bang Bang Shrimp Rice Bowl, serve the coated shrimp over steamed white rice with shredded cabbage.
  • Adjust the amount of sriracha to control the heat level of your spicy creamy shrimp sauce.
