Make these addictive, savory green beans coated in a glossy, sweet-and-salty glaze. This recipe uses bacon and simple ingredients to create the best green bean side dish for weeknights or holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 4 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon pieces in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon pieces with a slotted spoon and set them aside on a paper towel-lined plate, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the trimmed green beans to the skillet with the bacon grease. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes until the beans are bright green and slightly tender-crisp.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, soy sauce, water, and garlic powder until the sugar dissolves. This creates your glaze.
  4. Pour the glaze mixture over the green beans in the skillet. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beans evenly.
  5. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the reserved crispy bacon pieces.
  6. Serve your glazed green beans immediately as a quick vegetable side or holiday vegetable side.

Notes

  • For a keto green bean recipe variation, substitute the brown sugar with a sugar substitute like erythritol or monk fruit sweetener.
  • If you prefer crispy green beans, roast them instead of sautéing, tossing them with oil and salt, then add the glaze at the very end.
  • These are excellent served alongside steak or chicken for a weeknight vegetable side.
