Make this bold, zesty, and herby Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce in just 15 minutes. It is a versatile compound butter perfect for steak, chicken, shrimp, or dipping bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. If you plan to serve this as a warm dipping sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. If you plan to serve it as a compound butter spread, keep it softened but not melted.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the softened or melted butter with the minced garlic, chopped chives, parsley, and thyme.
  3. Add the Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes, if using.
  4. Stir in the fresh lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together until all ingredients are fully incorporated and the mixture is uniform.
  5. For a compound butter, spoon the mixture onto plastic wrap, roll it into a log shape, and chill until firm.
  6. For a dipping sauce, keep the butter warm over very low heat or serve immediately while warm.
  7. Serve this zesty dipping sauce with grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, or use it as a savory butter for vegetables or crusty bread.

Notes

  • To make this a true compound butter, mix the ingredients while the butter is soft, form it into a log using plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least one hour before slicing.
  • You can substitute shallots for some of the garlic for a milder onion flavor.
  • This recipe makes a great homemade steakhouse sauce alternative.
