Make authentic, tender Southern Blackberry Dumplings on the stovetop. This easy, one-pot dessert features juicy blackberries simmering in a sweet syrup beneath soft, comforting dough pillows.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries, 1/2 cup of the sugar, water, lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a medium saucepan. Bring this mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and let it gently bubble while you prepare the dumplings.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt for the dumplings.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  5. Drop the dumpling dough by rounded teaspoonfuls directly onto the simmering blackberry mixture. Space them out slightly.
  6. Cover the saucepan tightly and cook the dumplings over low heat for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. This steams the dumplings.
  7. After 15 minutes, gently uncover the pot. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar over the dumplings and syrup.
  8. Simmer uncovered for 5 more minutes, allowing the syrup to thicken slightly.
  9. Remove from heat. Serve your warm blackberry dumplings immediately with cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before adding them to the syrup mixture.
  • For extra tender dumplings, avoid peeking at the pot while they steam for the first 15 minutes.
  • This recipe works well as a classic Southern Style Dessert cooked entirely on the stovetop.
