Ingredients
Scale
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup sour cream, full fat, room temperature
1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
Heat butter and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat.
Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, for 45 to 60 minutes until they are deep brown and sweet. Do not rush this step; low and slow caramelization builds flavor.
Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth.
Stir in the cooled caramelized onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well until everything is evenly distributed.
Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to fully meld.
Serve cold with potato chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
Notes
For the creamiest texture, ensure your sour cream and cream cheese are at room temperature before mixing.
This dip tastes better the next day, so prepare it ahead of your gathering.
Serve with sturdy chips or toasted baguette slices for dipping.
